A Proud History

Mercury outboard engines had their beginnings in 1939, when Carl Kiekhaefer, a young engineer, bought a dying company that manufactured outboard motors at Cedarburg, Wisconsin. The assets of the company included 300 defective outboards.

Although Kiekhaefer’s never intended to enter the outboard business, his original plan being to manufacture magnetic separators for the dairy industry, he decided to rebuild the rejected outboards and sell them in order to get some cash for his new business. But the engines performed so well that orders started showering from all directions, and the Kiekhaefer Corporation, with the brand name of Mercury, took birth.

During the war, the company quickly shifted gears to supply the armed forces with all types of lightweight engines, along with generators, compressors and chainsaws. After the war, the 1946 Mercury model became the launching pad for its future expansion. Soon the company flooded the market with more and more improved models, and Mercury set the outboard speed record in the 1960’s. After the company’s merger with Brunswick Corp in 1961, it became the leading manufacturer of outboard engines.
